If I miss a spellbook in level one...

If I get the upgraded version of that spell later on, do I still unlock Challenge mode? I missed the one in "Just A Puddle."
Should I start over?

No, if you don't have the original, then the upgrade gives you the original instead of the upgrade. But since you missed one in Chapter 1, you could pick it up early on in Madcap mode if you just want to keep going. Madcap mode is really fun, I think.
