OFFICIAL Mafia Host Signup Thread

I see that everyone wants to take a turn at being a mafia game host. Unfotunately, this leads to people starting new threads earlier and earlier in order to get the jump on everyone else and right now, there are two different threads purporting to be signups for the next game. This will be very confusing for everyone, so I have decided to jump in and make some arbitrary rules to avoid complete chaos.

Arbitrary Rules:
The current game that is being run by Mr. Onion is officially declared to be known forever more as Mafia game 6. All subsequent games shall be number from that start point.
There are two signups in progress right now. One purports to be for mafia game 7. The other purports to be for mafia game 7 or 8. The 7 or 8 startup actually was first, but the 7 startup has more players signed up and more recent activity, so I declar the the mafia game 7 sign up will be for game 7 and the mafia game 7 or 8 sign up will be for game 8.
There are several other people who have shown interest in hosting a game of their own, including myself. Also, Jamul is considering some sort of computer hosted automated version at some point. Once that happens, there will proably be less interest in the human hosted games, so there should be a fair chance for every one who is interested in hosting a game to do so before that happens. I suggest that everyone who wants to host a game sign up in this thread and I will make an order list of who is next, because I can continuously update threads in Total Mayhem and I am not subject to the 1 week editing rule here. Jamul could do it anywhere, but he has enough work to do.
The official list of who is going to host a mafia game is below. I will sign up in one hour to give others a chance to get on the list ahead of me. This is a good time, because our European friends are still awake. Do not bother to sign up if you are the host of the 7 or 7/8 game, as your names will be at the top of the list when I create it in one hour.
If your name is on the list and you host a seriously flawed game through your own mistake, not the fault of the people playing it, and you are on the list to host another game, I will move you down 3 positions on the list, so you can watch some other games before you host again.

There should be a rule against people who give away all of their Mafia buddies. It makes the Mafia mad because they can't win, and it makes the host mad because his/her game was ruined! If somebody ruins a game, then they can't play for the next 2 or 3 games. :)

Even if this means that the Mafia can't post a bunch of townies and claim that they're Mafia, the game will no longer be constantly ruined!

I think there should be a rule AGAINST having multiple sign-ups on the list. I could just sign up constantly so I get a game every month! Existing sign-ups should stay, but some people (*Cough* Mr Onion and Chaucer *Cough*) are taking advantage of the fact that there's no rule against it. (Or maybe if there's already 10 games between this game and your last one, you could sign up again)

I am not going to let anyone have their name on this list in more than two places, and there will always be at least five others in between. You notice that I left 10 positions in between my two games and if we continue to have such a high interest in signing up, I will move the limit up to 10 apart.

The intention is not to be harsh, it's to give everyone who wants to host a chance. It wouldn't be fair to the other people to let one person monopolize the hosting. That's why I created the list in the first place, to give everyone a fair chance.

I really don't have the effort to do a game, and the list is ridiculously long, but I think there's potential for a Shakespeare Mafia. For instance, Romeo and Juliet instead of siblings, and Lady Macbeth instead of the suicide bomber. Just a thought.

By now I'd have signed up, but the list is insanely long, partly due to the fact that some people have signed up more then once (as in, signed up for 3 different slots at the same time).

It is now that I suggest people can only take one slot at a time, and can only sign up for another slot when their current mafia game (or future one) is finished. By doing this, the list will be shortened, and potential mafia hosts will come forth, and sign up.
Some people might also counter this proposition with the classic 'first come first serve' argument, which I personally (with a few exceptions) never liked.

Nobody is on the list 3 times. Someone asked to be on the list 3 times and I turned him down. I am only permitting people to be on the list twice.

What do other people think? We could make it once only. If we did that, I wouldn't allow multiple signups in the future, but I wouldn't dump anyone who is already on the list, so everyone would have the same chance for future signups.

I signed up for a second game because the list was too long- I wasn't going to wait 10 more games to sign up when there'd be a zillion more games on the list! Besides, some people already signed up for seconds. :)

Although I don't think that one game a person would solve the list problem very much- That would only eliminate 5 games, and then, since the list is shorter, the impatient people, who previously refused to join unless they get better spots, would sign up, and probably make the list go back to almost its original size.

And first come, first serve, of course- If you wanted to host, you should have signed up! ;) You should sign up now, if you want to do a game (because the list will probably only get bigger).

No, you may not. Asking for a second slot when I asked for input on whether or not there should even be second slots is completely ridiculous, so I have decided that nobody can have a second slot, including those people who already had one. You may sign up after the game you are slotted for is over, period.

If you are not a regular player, you may not sign up at all. You must complete at least three games as a player before I will add you to the list.

If you run a seriously flawed game, you may still sign up for another, but you will be moved down 3 from whatever your normal position would have been. If it is your second flawed game, I will poll the regular players to see if they would like you to host again. If at least 2/3 agree to let you host despite running 2 seriously flawed games, you may sign up, but you will be moved down 6 from whatever your normal number would have been. If you run a third seriously flawed game, you may not host again. New hosts should feel free to ask advice from former hosts whose games they enjoyed in order to avoid including serious flaws in their games.

I have removed all six names that violated these new rules from the list, so this is the 33% shorter official list as of right now:

For one of my 5 games, I was planning to have my mafia godfather (the Necromancer) sort of like that, except that he has a 5\20 chance of succeeding, and the townie must be killed first. Is that acceptable, Hammered?

A recruiter is not impossible to use, but you need to limit the number of uses and start with fewer mafia to make up for it. Generally speaking, it is easy to throw off the balance of these games and you have to be very careful about giving super powers to either side.

I finally thought of a theme. It might be the best/most broken game of mafia I've ever hosted. Anyway, I still have lots of time to think about it, but for now, I'm calling it Locked-In Mafia. (Until I think of a better name) I'm not sure, but I might need a co-host when the time comes.

That depends on how much of the game you played before you were replaced. If it was only a day or two, it doesn't count. The point of requiring the playing is to be sure that a potential host understands the game well enough to be successful at hosting. Someone who signs up and gets replaced because he doesn't actually play hasn't demonstrated that.

I thought of a fun idea, but it won't work very well in a Prehistoric theme, so please change my theme to Carnival Mafia. :D (I still plan to make Prehistoric Mafia later, so nobody steal it!)

I'd like to play a mafia game, doesn't have to be themed, that creates new gameplay for the roles or uses roles that have never been used before, or a gameplay style that is different to the normal. For some reason, I think Jamul's is going to include one of these. ;)

The punishment for the first occurrence will be a 3 game delay for your next hosting. The punishment for the second occurrence will be a permanent ban from hosting. Alright - all these new people! I don't feel like looking all of you guys up. If you want to host and you haven't hosted before, please include the numbers of your three qualifying games, when you were killed in them and the post numbers of several substantive posts that contributed to the game. For example: Game #27, Night #1, Posts #17, 23, & 26. However, that is not a good example, because if you were killed on Day 1 or Night 1, the game doesn't count. If you spent the whole game lurking, it doesn't count either. Please remember that you can't count the current game, as the game has to be over before it can be included. I am going to check up on you, so don't bother to tell me about your non-qualifying games, I just would like to know where to check so I can save some time.

As for Justin's request, he may have waited to sign up again, but that isn't good enough. As the host of two seriously flawed games, he requires your approval to host again. If you are a regular player, please forum PM me and let me know whether you would be willing to play in a game hosted by Justin or not. I will tally the votes and add Justin in or not, depending on the results. If you all decide to let him host again, he will still be subjected to the standard 6 game delay from the time he signed up. Note: Extra weight will be given to the votes of the people who actually played in the games in question, so please include that information, so I don't have to go look it up.

Also note another new rule change, in addition to allowing games in between new game hosts, I will be including flawed game hosts in this scheme as well, so we don't get a bunch of games in a row that people are reluctant to play in.

Plus, it says very clearly in several places in this thread: you need to have played in at least three games, and made a significant contribution in them, before you can sign up to host. The rule isn't there as a way of being mean and trying to limit your fun: it's about increasing everyone's chances of hosting a good game when their turn comes around. There's a lot to learn in mafia, and it takes time.

The splitting of the group into two leagues will be happening immediately after PK's game. You can check out the division in the post in Non-Hamumu Games to see which league you are in.

There will now be two signup lists, one for each league, and to make things fair, people may sign up to host only in their own league. However, I realize that means that some people are not going to be able to play games by their favorite hosts, if the host in question happens to be in the other league, so I propose an invitation system: If you want a host from the other league to host a game for your league, get some of your fellow league members together, and, if a majority from your league agrees, and if the host is willing, the host will be able to sign up on your league's host list for a game in the normal rotation.

I am also going to ease up a little on the restrictions for flawed hosting and we will see how that goes. There is still no excuse for lurker hosting and that restriction remains the same, but in order to allow more freedom for experimentation, we will permit greater flexibility in whether a game is truly flawed or not. If you are a new host, it is still advisable to get some advice from an experienced host to avoid making your league so angry that they won't sign up for your next game, and if you are hosting a completely non-experimental game, you will need to make a reasonable effort to balance it, but obviously it is impossible to figure out how some experimental things like Luck Mafia or Brilliant Idea Mafia will turn out without trying them, so we either won't hold it against you at all or will impose only minimal sanctions if things don't work out as you envisioned them.

To start us off, I have divided our current list into two separate lists. The relative order remains unchanged. The hosts for the games #A1 and #B1 should post the sign ups for their games as soon as possible.

Happystickman was dropped down 2 positions because he didn't start his game. As of now these will be two official lists. You have to start your signups within 2 days of when the game before yours starts and it doesn't really matter if you have your roles ready in order to create a sign up list. Many people do create previews of their games for the signups, but you don't have to.

SpaceManiac: You have to have finished playing in 3 whole games to qualify to host. I only see posts for two.

First time hosts: I want to be able to see that you made some significant posts, not a significant number of posts. Pointing out one or two examples in each of your three qualifying games will do.

Just point out the one or two most significant posts you made in each game. They don't have to be the most important posts in the game. Obviously, it is more likely that the experienced players will have made the more significant deductions.

And under no circumstances should you quote every post. I am trying to avoid having to read every post. I shouldn't have to read more than a half a dozen or so in total.

And significant posts are posts that are significant. :p As in, a post that's not just a vote or agreeing with somebody else. Posts with deductions and things, to make sure you're not just a bandwagoner.

Now that DotD is over, I'll sign for an A game. I don't have a theme in mind yet- Maybe Anti-Mafia.

I would like to sign up, if at all possible.
I played in game 27, which was broken through no fault of my own. In post 70 I concluded that Ufo-Man must have a power role. I also noticed and pointed out the two nightkills in post 109.
I also played in game 28. I bandwagoned and followed the advice of CG, aka Woody the entire game. However, there is one post that stands out: post 222. There, I remembered earlier instructions from CG, and made the vote that won the game for the town.
Just recently, I played in game B1, but I couldn't do much because of my role for most of the game. I did fall for Ufo-Man's trick in post 149, and I tried to get people to notice my condition with posts 151 and 157, then left subtle hints to an event I was not allowed to reveal in posts like 190. Then I deduced wrongly in post 196, assuming that I would never be a townie forced to mimic a mafia in any reasonable game.

If I can host, then I'd like to have my first game be something safe and simple, like Alpha Complex Mafia.
