They're named that because that's what they are :P
A "spider" is a term used to describe a software program belonging to a search engine. Search engines "index" the WWW by sending these spiders to WWW sites. The spider "crawls" all of the links in all of the available web pages of the site and it records the information it finds or sends the info back home to it's "mother". The information is then stored in the search engine database and is used for results when people search for things. Other terms that means the same thing are "robot" or "bot" (short for "robot"). A robot does its job automatically once it is started up.

They're used by Yahoo! (the search engine) and apparently, "Slurp" is just a name they gave their spider bots -o_-o

Why do they actually name the bots that? Couldn't they be a bit more secretive?

I don't think they even need/want to hide those bots.
