The forum definitely wouldn't be the same without them. They are necessary, IMO, but shouldn't be overused - And make them look tidy, please!

I wholeheartedly agree! My dad thinks they are tacky and eliminate imagination in writing (like expressing emotion in writing instead of with emoticons like :x, :p, or :roll:). I disagree because I think you can show more emotion. e.g. make sure people know you are sarcastic by using :rolleyes: or :roll: rather than possibly offend someone.
