Red River Rafting - Any Tips

I'm replaying Kid Mystic, trying to pick up the things I missed the first time through (like, say, the Armageddon Sword), and I am completely stuck on Red River Rafting. Yes, I've actually completed this level, getting the fairy and all, twice in my previous game. Still, I can't seem to come up with the right hand-eye coordination to manage it.

I know the path I need to carve. I know where everything is. I just don't have the twitchiness to execute it. It's not like I die in the same place every time; it's just that I can't seem to get through it without making a mistake. I've spent six hours on this level over the last three days and I'm about to go completely crazy.

I've tried using Savey Fairy, but that doesn't help, because I get resurrected in the lava. I've tried using Runny Fairy for better maneuverability on the log, but it seems to have no effect. I'm at wit's end. Does anybody know anything I can do to make this level just a little more feasible?

A wise man once said, "If you have a problem, complain about it on the Internet, and it shall immediately solve itself." After posting my whine, I finally solved the level. Tips are still appreciated if anybody else is having issues with it! :)

Let's see... All I can think of is Steelskin. Cast it, run around the river collecting everything, and then move to the opposite side. You'd need a lot of mana, however.
