If any of you use the mighty PDN (http://www.getpaint.net) You might appreciate this.

Step 7. Add noise, same settings as before but with coverage of 100.
Step 8. Zoom blur at 100, remember to set the centre to the same as the centre of the gradient.
You now have a passable explosion. You can stop now, or continue for best results.
Step 9. Duplicate the explosion layer.
Step 10. Set the duplicate’s opacity to 128 and the blend mode to multiply.
Step 11. Duplicate the explosion layer 1 more time.
Step 12. Use the “Brightness/Contrast” effect. Set the contrast to 100.
Step 13. Set the blend mode to multiply.
You should have this

Step 14. Make a new layer.
Step 15. On the new layer, make a small white (filled in) circle.
Step 16. Use zoom blur at 100 five times.
Step 17. Move the glow layer down so it is just above the background.
