View Full Version : A Prototype of a PWNZOR-Esque Thing

Remember the fun PWNZOR forum battles? :p Well, I'm going to try something similar, and to get everybody interested, I also added a map to run around in, and a different set of characters! It probably shouldn't be called PWNZOR anymore...
How the game works:
First of all, you pick a character name, class, and color.
Then, after everybody signs up, everybody is placed randomly on a 10x10 map, like this:

Every character has a set of moves (same as PWNZOR), which they use in order to kill everybody else. However, there's also a 'range' stat added onto most attacks, so you can't just hit anywhere on the map! Plus some new forms of resources.
Every round, everybody privately sends me an action, a coordinate for where you use an action (so you don't necessarily have to use moves on players!), and where the character moves. Each character class has a ''speed'' statistic that shows how many tiles it can walk through each round. At the beginning of each round, everybody's actions take effect, then everybody moves, and a new round starts!
I know the classes are probably unbalanced (which is why I'm testing this!) and most need some extra explaining, but here they are:

I think I need to explain the move ''Charge''. :p With ''Charge'', you immediately teleport somewhere in the same row/column as you (as long as no other players are in the way), and, if a player is where you landed, then they take damage based on how many tiles you ran through to reach them. For instance, just charging 3 tiles is only going to do 3 damage, but charging 9 tiles to hit somebody is going to deal 9 damage, which is enough to kill any enemy instantly!
And the other thing I need to explain is that when a warrior is sprinting, he is also hidden (because everybody who would've targeted his coordinates would've missed).
And now, another stereotypical character from RPGs: The wizard! He's mostly just a remake of the PWNZOR wizard... Except he uses mana instead of energy! He does lots of damage from far away, but is slightly slower and weaker than others. :p

I might as well explain this here: All attacks with a range (except the Charge move and the Spear Jab move, which you'll see later) don't have to go in a straight line! The Fireball can zigzag around as long as the distance it travels doesn't go over 7 spaces.
Also, for Ka-BOOM, you pick a coordinate and the bomb lands there next turn. However, the explosion can hit YOU, too, so don't place it too close!
Yet another stereotypical character class: The rogue! Rogues use cooldowns instead of real resources. They are very fast-moving and can beat up hiding guys via piercing attacks and poisons.

For using Pickpocket on Rogues, it will cause any moves that are cooling down to have their cooldowns reset (although moves that are ready to be used will not be reset). For pickpocketing Natives, it will cause the Native's spear to be dropped behind the rogue. Also, the resource-stealing only takes effect at the END of the round, so trying to steal the wizard's last mana before he casts a fireball to kill you won't work!
The last stereotypical class: The ranger! He's good at fighting from far away, and uses ammo as a resource, which is pretty similar to ''Energy''.

Like I said with the wizard, actions with a range don't necessarily require a straight path to the target. Also note that if you try to shoot a ranged move at somebody and somebody's in the way, the arrow will have to go around the person in the way and use up some range.
And now a non-common character class; The clown! Clowns have a limited amount of uses for each move, until they get restocked every couple rounds. They're great at laying traps and causing havoc upon their enemies while they hide in the corner.

Also, Mime Barrier blocks both people and attacks from passing through it!!! You can prevent a warrior from charging up to you, or a ranger from sniping you. If you create a mime barrier over somebody, they can still walk and shoot out of it; They don't become stuck or anything. Banana Peels and Mime Barriers only last until the end of the round.
And the final class, the native! Inspired by D2 Amazons and D3 Witch Doctors. They have powerful abilities, but often have to waste their time to chase after their spear, since they only have one.

This character needs the most explaining...
Just to explain the Spear a bit more: If the Native throws his spear, he'll have to go run where it landed in order to get back to attacking. To pick up a spear, you must be within one tile of it. If he breaks his spear, he'll have to wait until it reforms in order to keep using any of his actions (which all require a spear). A fun thing he can do is pick up other natives' dropped spears to use as his own (although he can only hold one at a time!).
The move Spear Jab hits the three spaces north/east/west/south of the Native (which direction depends on which he picks!). This means he can jab three people in one move, if they're all in a line. :p
Also, the move Spike Pit will stay wherever the Native placed it until the Native walks over to fetch his spear from it. It's pretty useless after the round it's placed, because the coordinates of the Pit will be revealed. Other Natives cannot swipe spears from each other's pits.
Finally, Jump-Thrust picks a player, not coordinates like most other skills. (because the player teleports over the target, following them even if they move).
If this doesn't run well, I might just host a normal PWNZOR free-for-all later. I'd have run this in the chat if constant map-making wasn't such an annoyance. :p

Remember, if you're signing up, pick name, class, and color! Only one person per class! If you want to be fun, you could also add some sort of backstory (instead of ''I'm a ranger, I'm red, and my name is Jim.'', you could be ''I'm a red ranger named Captain Photon-Blaster, Savior of the Galaxy, and I blast other people to death with my photons! Fear me!'')

I will sign up as Agent Orange, an orange rogue. There's a long and complicated backstory behind it, but that will be cleared up if I ever get around to finishing my webcomic.

Alright, updated list...
I forgot two things:
1) I uploaded the clown without putting my last update on it! All it did was fix Banana Peel damage. (Don't worry, I won't be changing any of the cards or maps midway through- What you see is what you get!)
2) No picking colors that people already have. :p The colors are there for the colored dots on the map that indicate where people are.

Diplomacy is allowed, as long as it's public, so no PMing people things like ''Wanna team up?'', but you can post that kind of thing in the topic.
Everybody just PM me an attack, the coordinates you attack, such as C10 or A5 (except for Spear Jab, which attacks a direction, and Jump-Thrust, which attacks a player), and finally, what coordinates you go to after attacking. Also, you can't go diagonal. 24 hour deadline.
Ask if you have questions!
Finally, two more things I forgot to explain:
Poison and Curse, like T&T, don't take effect on the turn they're given.
Piercing attacks go through Mime Barriers.

I don't think people realize this, so I'll say it again:
Actions happen FIRST, then moves, otherwise people would never be able to guess exactly where everybody else is. :p
This means most of the melee-users can't do anything yet.

ROUND 1:
Six heroes walked into a forest, and then they all spontaneously went homicidally insane and attempted to kill each other!
PlasmaCannonsRule stuffed a plasma arrow into a plasma cannon and shot it into Hyperme the Wizard! POW! 3 damage!
Hyperme decided to kill the closest person to him... which happened to be himself! BAM! Burninated! Hyperme decided to shoot himself! Hyperme the Wizard died! (Yes, he told me that he used a fireball on E5, where he was standing)
Agent Orange dropped a smoke bomb, creating a cloud of cheese-dust while he escaped to A1. Nobody attacked him, though, so his stealthy sneaking was useless!
Kacper and Hammer Up decided to sit on the ground doing absolutely nothing; Not even move. Not a very successful maneuver; An anvil landed on Kacper!
Roland, standing far away, laughed at Kacper, and then (just like a certain other clown), got in a battleship, went to J4, and put up a banner reading ''MISSION ACCOMPLISHED''. Roland then went on to give a speech about how his mission to kill everyone is finally complete forever and will totally not be continuing for five more years.
PlasmaCannonsRule ran off to G2 after shooting Hyperme.

Round Two:
PlasmaCannonsRule sat around on the ground, being a huge lurker. Coolguy considered zapping him with an orbital laser, but decided against it.
Hammer Up, using his spear as a pole vault, lept high into the air in the direction of PlasmaCannonsRule! ONOS! Jump-thrust!
Agent Orange started running back into the action (to C3), but a big Mime Barrier appeared right in his way at Column B! D'oh! He got bounced back to where he was. Far away, Roland McDoland laughed, sold more fast food to children, and ran off to J5.
Like PCR, Kacper just sat around in lurk-mode doing nothing at all without even a PM. Nobody attacked him.

Round Three:
Kacper took off his helmet to reveal that he was actually Blastobutter in disguise! Blastobutter swung at thin air to build up his rage and then ran over to E5.
Hammer Up stabbed PCR from above! POW! 5 damage! PCR lay dying. Hammer Up ran off to F6.
PCR looked up to see an anvil falling towards his head. He decided to get revenge! He whipped out his bow and fired an arrow right into Roland's giant red nose! 3 piercing damage!
Then the anvil hit. BAM! PCR died!
Cheeselord ran over to D4.
NOTE: Yes, three melee-masters are all next to each other, but when counting range, you can't count diagonals (same for moving)!!!! Sorry, you three; Maybe I'll change that for melee-characters next game.

Round Four: (Wow, that was fast!)
Roland noticed that most of his evil clown tricks were gone! But he still had one trap up his sleeve- He tossed a bunch of bananas all over the ground! Unfortunately for him, nobody stepped on them! D'oh!
Agent Orange ran over to Roland (at I6), almost landing on one of the banana-tiles.
Hammer Up ran south away from the other heroes while he spear continued to reform.
Blastobutter42 ROARED, and then, whipping out his comically oversized sword, charged! He ran, leaping over banana peels! Roland tried to run two spaces north, but he wasn't fast enough; Blastobutter42 ran 5 spaces to J5 and did 5 damage! Roland was smushed!

I'm certainly capable of doing that without an alliance. I'm proposing it for strategic reasons. I can promise you I won't attack you this turn if you accept. After all, you very well might survive the attack, but the poison is quite deadly when combined with a spearing.

Round Five: (Sorry about the slow update- School surprise-attacked me and my normal computer wouldn't get on the internet yesterday)
Hammer Up and Cheeselord ran over to the C column! Hammer Up to C8, Cheeselord to C6. Cheeselord stealthed as he ran. Hammer Up's spear reformed.
(By the way, no PMing each other, even if you're allies- All diplomacy stays in the topic!!!!)

Round Six:
Blastobutter ran at Orange and smacked him into oblivion. Agent Orange, with a final ''Believe it!'', died. He would've ran to B7 if he'd survived.
Meanwhile, Hammer Up sat around lurking and missed the round.

Round Seven:
Hammer Up, with incredible speed, used his spear as a drill to dig a hole directly under Blastobutter, and then left the spear at the bottom of the pit, pointing straight up! ONOS! A spike pit!
Blastobutter started to fall in, but he thrust his sword into the wall of the pit to keep from falling. However, the sword started to cut through the rock - Bah! It turns out a sword can be too sharp after all!
Blastobutter threw down his shield at the spear, causing it to tilt slightly to the left. But that was all he needed! BoB dropped down on the safe side of the pit.
Blastobutter survived the spike pit by using guard!

Round Eight:
Hammer Up ran away from Blastobutter into a forest that happened to be at A9, where he sat around doing nothing.
Blastobutter also felt like running away, so he went off to the mysterious land of D2, where he smacked at the invisible dragon at D3. Also, those are coordinates, not Diablo games.

Round Nine:
BlastoButter swung at the thin air in D3 again (note: He told me to just pick a random square in his reach and that was the square random.org picked!). Then, he ran over to C2 to find the lost city of C2lantis.
Hammer Up ran over to F9, still taking no actions (because he doesn't even have a spear to do them with!).

Once again, Blastobutter stalls. He just runs over to C1 and smacks at D1. Uh oh, he's getting angry, and Hammer Up won't like him when he's angry! :p He's at 4/5 Rage!
Hammer Up casually walks over to E8 in the direction of his spike pit. Not a very eventful round.

Round Eleven:
Yet again, the living people do nothing interesting whatsoever. Hammer Up just walks up a square to E7 and BlastoButter whips out his shield just in case Hammer Up attacks... which he can't do until he hops into the spike pit to retrieve his spear. :p (It won't hurt you, HU, if that's what you're thinking by avoiding it!!!!)
By the way, since the last several rounds have just been full of both players hiding, this game must end by Round 15, or all the dead people will rise from the grave, kill Hammer Up and Blastobutter, and then declare themselves the winners.

Round Thirteen:
Blastobutter sprinted around Hammer Up to D6, and then threw a horrible smack of death! POW! Hammer Up was severely wounded!
The wounded Hammer Up tossed a Spike Pit where Blastobutter just was... but since didn't end his turn there (plus he would've avoided it by sprinting), it had no effect. Double-unfortunately for HU, Hammer Up apparently forgot to move somewhere! ONOS! That could mean the end of him!

GAME OVER!
Since Hammer Up surrendered, Blastobutter knocked him on the head, and ker-pow, down goes HU! Blastobutter the Warrior wins, after 13 rounds of pitched combat! He now gets to ascend to the throne and rule England. (did I mention this was about winning the crown? No? Well, that's because I just made it up)
Comments and Opinions on the game:
-There's several things I should have specified at the beginning of the game, such as how your own traps (such as the spike trap) won't hurt you, and what happens when your attempt to move somewhere fails (like if somebody moved there already or if there's a mime barrier in the way). And also, how traps only damage players who end their turn on one! Bah!
-There were balance issues, but those were definitely expected, since this is the first time I've run this kind of game!
-I'll change ''Move'' and ''Action'' into separate rounds. It would make the game longer, unfortunately, but it gets rid of confusion and turns the game into less of a Battleship clone about guessing where everybody is. :p
-I'll have to do something about people running away! Like maybe giving XP to a player each time they deal damage.
-Several fun moves weren't used, like Javelin Throw (from the Native), all of the wizard's moves, and many of the Rogue's moves!
-Maybe some way to customize characters would be interesting (like after picking a class, you get to pick from 6-7 different moves for your character, or everybody makes up a class name in the sign-ups and I make a card for each one, so everybody's unique).
Stuff I'll Do For Balance:
-Make clowns slightly faster (to 3 speed instead of 2) and Laughing Gas more dangerous (by possibly dealing 3 damage instead of 2). Plus, possibly replace Mime Barrier, because of all the complications I'd need to explain. (Like, can wizards teleport around it? Can natives jump-thrust over it? Can a unit be encased in it? Do piercing attacks go through it?)
-Change the Native's Jump-Thrust move so that it does less damage, but nobody knows who it's about to hit! (plus make spear regeneration after breaking one faster to 1 turn instead of 2). The original version was too mean to characters that didn't have hides or had low HP. Also
-Possibly upgrade the Rogue's stealth move so the Rogue can truly 'stealth' by not revealing the rogue's location to other players the next turn.
-For Warriors, make Charge more expensive and cause Smack to only give rage if it succeeds in smacking people.
-Replace the Wizard's ''Ka-BOOM!'' with something else, like possibly a Meditate that lets the Wizard refill MP quickly.
-I might replace the Ranger's Sharpshoot with something more interesting, like Multishot or Rapid Fire.

I think you should make healing faster and cheaper, and also not have any classes with HPs low enough that they could be killed in one shot by a normal move. But otherwise, that seemed to work out very well. :p

Yeah, most classes didn't have healing - I might make the Ranger's Reload heal.
Also, I forgot to mention, but I'll put it here: Pickpocket will be a health-stealing move in the future, not resource-stealing! :p The old version is too mean to wizards.
