My son and I were watching sort of hynosis videos on youtube yesterday and one of them turned into a screamer! I had never encountered one of those before and then we found another one soon after. What is with these people, putting content like that on youtube? What is the point?

There is no "point" to Screamers, people are just being stupid and apparently enjoy the idea of scaring others to death. Screamers have existed for years, and they always will.
Tip: Don't watch:
- "Hypnosis" videos
- Videos claiming to be "hidden footage" on some DVD or whatever
- Videos that claim to just be a single still picture but are still a video of at least about 20 seconds length
- Videos claiming to be ghost sightings
- Any video that tells you to turn up your volume
- "Where's Waldo" videos
Hope this will help you avoid screamers in the future :P Also, don't click links that claim to be linking to a picture but actually link to a Flash file or Youtube video.

And don't watch videos that have "Video Game Glitch!" or something like that in them.
Oh, and elevator music videos.

They try to scare the living daylights out of you. I've stumbled across one a year ago. Some Youtube people try to also post other inappropriate and vulgar things. Those Youtubites... :x

Usually it helps to keep the volume down or pause right at the start and scan through videos that might be screamers...

That's what I do before I watch ANY video!

Wow, thanks for the tips! I didn't realize they were such a problem. I guess I've just been incredibly lucky up until yesterday.

It really depends on what you're about to watch, and who is posting it. If you're unsure, look at their channel first. If they have a history of odd videos, or they sound like an immature person, likely you're at risk.

My brother normally checks the comments after getting scared half to death by one. (The video name is "Weird Sign on High Ground"). If the author is being insulted heavily, normally it's either a bad political jab or a screamer.

Yeah, that really helps, although it almost always involves profanity, so if your son is young...well, yeah...

There is a lot of nasty stuff on Youtube. You have to be careful. I find usually in fact that if you just follow the suggested videos on related subjects there is a definite downward slide. For example, let's say you want to watch silly vids of people slipping and falling in the pool etc. It will bring up other vids that are supposed to be about accidents but they are now about motorcycle wipeouts. Next thing you know it's people being gored by animals. And filth seems to be everywhere, linked to every topic.

I saw some funny stuff today, Matt Rob and Chad. They pull a prank involving aliens that goes horribly wrong.

There are also videos claiming to be something (ex: Super Secret Character in Brawl), but is actually a random TV clip with crazy colors and super loud volume.

Those, chainposts, and screamers aren't even funny; they're just stupid.

Imagine if people started doing screamers in real life. You could be in a crowd of people, strangers, and just randomly turn around and scream at someone for no good reason.

Actually I was talking to my son in a bookstore a couple of weeks ago about some scary movies and how they use cheap effects to startle you. To illustrate my point I did a sort of scream and suddenly grabbed him. A lady who was just walking up to beside where we were standing got really scared for a sec and did a little scream! Then we all had a laugh as she realized that I was just joking around with my son. Then she went and told a man she was with what happened and we had another laugh.

When I was still a kid my brothers and I would play an amusing game where we would be standing up high somewhere, like near the edge of a cliff or on a balcony, and one would grab the other and do that startle sound. It was really mature. If we tried it now it might induce a heart attack.

:???: What would happen after the startle sound and why would it induce a heart attack?

If someone is abruptly startled or shocked, their heart reacts to it. Sometimes, it might not be able to handle the sudden stress, and it might have a heart attack. I don't know much about what exactly happens.

Being startled near the edge of a cliff, or on a balcony, you will naturally think that you're about to fall off. If someone grabs you, the assumption is that you were in the process of falling off just before they grabbed you. It's an example of an fear (in this case of heights) being unconsciously invoked by a startle reaction. If someone startled you when there was a tarantula around, you would unconsciously think you were being bitten, etc. It's a classic manipulation technique exploited by cheesy horror and suspense movies.

Youtube, sadly, much like most of the internet, is full of morons. Morons who think tricking people with screamers is comedy of a Shakespearean level.

Try pausing the video and checking the comments if you aren't sure about a video's content. If the comments don't give you brain damage, that is.

It's called a Scream Queen, which is what the actresses who starred in B horror movies were called (in reference to the fact that their job was simply to scream at the horrible giant bugs and whatnot).

Ubernoob

I have never met anyone who likes screamers, and yet they keep being produced. Obviously some deviant individuals are out there making them for their own reasons. They're like the virus makers. What good reason could someone have for infecting the general computer population with viruses? And yet new ones are created all the time.

Most Viruses are made so people buy more computers. And screamers are for entertainment.
Another thing that is as almost as scary as screamers are those acid trip videos.
The first one i saw was "8-Bit Theater is now making pizza!"
What it is pretty much is just random stuff that looks like you are taking acid.

The people who make the viruses get money if they use them to steal your personal information.

BACK ON TOPIC:
I HATE the videos that claim that they are showing something that they're not. For example, a video called Halo 4 made it seem like it was a trailer for a fourth Halo game. All it was was a video of a gold Spartan shooting an assult rifle in Halo 3. Waste of 6 seconds video time.

One needs to "think outside the box". ;) I found "This video contains hiding from the audience" bizaarely funny, even though all it contains is a cutoff picture of Dr. Robotnik/Egghead, um, hiding from the audience for 4:31. Hauntingly hilarious.
