In numerous occasions on the Simpsons, elephants have been portrayed as a little more carnivorous than in other places. For example, Bart's pet elephant had tried to eat him several times. And on the episode where the Simpsons live at the old farm, an elephant was fed a porcupine as a treat (my guess is it was used for providing fertilizer).

My question is: Is there truth in elephants eating smaller animals?

Killing, but not eating.

Elephants do occasionally go insane and attack people, but I'm pretty sure they don't eat them.

Elephants aren't carnivores. They will kill in self defense. Bart's elephant was just portrayed like that for humor.

If you look at an elephant's teeth (and who hasn't? Just kidding:)), they are clearly herbivorous. They have tusks for defence and for males to fight each other for dominance. Please see here for more info on elephants' diet: http://www.awf.org/content/wildlife/detail/elephant .

While everyone knows that elepants are herbivores, animals do weird things. But for the elephant's case, I'd say the Simpsons were just trying to be funny and it worked.
