With European patent 2080538 A1:
The new Wii Horseback Riding Saddle!

First the Vitality Sensor, now this! Why?

The inflatable seat has a pocket for the Wii remote, which is used to sense movement via the accelerometers. Players hold the nunchuck to simulate holding the reins or, as the Nintendo patent describes, “a raised hand for balance as in Bronco riding, a lasso, a sword or other weapon, etc.”

Here’s a better look at the device. The cushion may inflatable, made of foam or another material, but it seems like Nintendo is leaning towards an inflatable seat. “A one-way air valve of conventional design may be provided to allow the user to inflate cushion. Construction may be similar to that of conventional inflatable exercise balls. An advantage of an inflatable design is that it is compact to ship and store.”

For example, the Wii main unit can display the back of a horse’s head and background of a trail, a field, a battlefield or other environment the virtual horse is being ridden through (see Figure 1A). The image may change in response to detected motion of the user.

But, wait the seat isn’t limited to horesback riding! Nintendo says their inflatable seat can be used to simulate riding other animals. The patent lists “bulls, camels, elephants, burros, dolphins, whales” and imaginary creatures such as “dragons, griffons, unicorns, giant eagles” as possible mounts. Nintendo also suggests the seat can be used for vehicles too like “hang gliders or other aircraft, a magic carpet, a motorcycle, a jet-ski, a land or sea exploration vehicles.”

That sounds totally awesome :o Don't get what this has to do with jumping the shark (though nobody uses that phrase anymore since JumpTheShark jumped the shark anyway).

EDIT: Also, your hotlinked pictures are broken and now contain only a link to the site where you got them.

How is it awesome?
Nintendo has now gotten to the point where they no longer make games... they make peripherals and tech demos for said peripherals.

Yeah. It IS kinda cool.
Sadly, Namco won't make a peripheral for Katamari Forever. It would've been cool.

Yes, this is actually pretty cool. They could ship this with the next Zelda game and make it optional if you want to use it while riding Epona. They could also use this for the next Wave Racer or soomething. And what about ATV races? Cool!!!

Now, if only 3rd party publishers didn't make horse games for Wii for girls....*shivers*

Oh, and why is the boy in the first picture wearing a full body costume?:???:

What's wrong with horse games for girls? >_> Just because you don't belong to the target audience, you can't forbid companies to make those games :p

Oh, and the vitality sensor isn't 'new'; it's been around since the NES/SNES era. Nintendo is just bringing it back (But not everyone thought it was a good idea, even IN Nintendo. I don't think the head of Nintendo especially liked the idea of bringing it back, but I could be wrong). Hopefully this means ROB will come back. (Power glove already made a comeback as the Wiimote + Wii motionplus, the wii fit board was even in the NES era, as a sort of DDR pad. There was even this awesome joystick thing, that wasn't really a joystick. Just two pieces of plastic, but it worked.)

And remember, just because they patent something, doesn't mean it'll make it through. I mean, even some of the accessories that currently exist are there to make the game feel more real. I mean, I LOVE the crossbow thing, even if there really is only one game that supports the accessory, as to my knowledge.
