Fireball help

Err.. hi newb here, I was wondering if someone could tell me how to shoot fireballs in normal fights...?
Err...
When in the tutorial house with the old man who teaches you how to shoot
the fireball, (not very well-ly, to be honest) pressing enter will shoot the fireball like I assume it's meant to. But in ANY other fight, be it mushrooms or spiders, it won't work, and I have to use that crappy little blue spell instead, which is weak :???:

The guy is telling to me to press the Fire button which is Enter apparently, but it doesn't work anywhere but his house!!!:x

btw, I seached the instructions, it brought me a link to a (this?) website, which didn't help, then told me to go to forums, so yeah...:???:

try using z to fire fireballs and x to fire spells. and make sure you actually have a fireball to fire, you lose them every time you change map or die...

I didn't know Enter was a fire button! I believe both Z and Control can serve as fire buttons as well. Like Megadog said, you need to pick up fire orbs (the yellow ones) in each level before you can use fireballs. More fire orbs means more fireballs at once.

oh andshift also works for spells. I think that covers it. lemme check.

EDIT you can also customize this in options so make it whatever you want.
