It's been my experience that none of them other than download.com and zdnet (which is hotfiles, right?) are worth ANYTHING. And I mean ANYTHING! Even tuCows hasn't been worth much to me. But I use a semi-automatic submission program (Submass, www.submass.com) and so I dump it out to every site in there. Download.com is one of those where it may not ever go up, and if it does, it'll probably take months. I'm still waiting to see if they're going to put up Loonyland or not, and I submitted it when I released it (march?).

On most of those sites, ones that look all fancy and professional, if they show you download counts, you'll find you're getting like 1 a month or so. Of course, most people who visit probably click on the link to your homepage instead to get more detailed info, so there could be some merit to it all. I recommend submass, or robosoft (maybe that's not what it's called... I don't recall) - some sort of not-quite-automatic submission system. It'll take a week or so to punch them all in, but once it's done, you'll be glad. With my next game, I'm going to try one of those "We promote your crappy games" companies that do the submission + search engine submission stuff for an exorbitant fee. I'm hoping it will be worth it, because I HATE doing that stuff!

Lots I think. The majority of hits come from "No Referrer" though of course. I think doing well on search engines is a key to becoming popular.

You could also try a site called winsite.com. I submitted a game, and it got up within a day. Already almost 70 people downloaded it.
