I think you are talking about that area with the Grand Pharaoh. That gas area usually has a powerup... Perhaps you are playing with a badge that starts you off with that type of powerup? As for that thing next to the fertilizer... that is the ghost slaying potion. Without it you cannot hurt ghosts.
