It all depends on what you think is important.

STRENGTH will increase how much damage you do to enemies
DEFENSE will decrease how much damage you take from enemies
SPEED will change how fast your character moves around as compared to other guys
ACCURACY will increase how many times you hit as compared to how many times you miss
STOMACHE will decrease how much food you eat every 2 seconds
INTELLECT will increase how much XP you get from each defeated monster
CHARISMA will decrease the price of objects
LIFE--need I say it? How many times you can get hit before you are no more.
WEIGHT will increase how much you can carry at once.

Your character type is determined by what you levelled up most

Peasant - level 1 only. nothing special.
Wizard - Intellect. Will occasionally blast everything on screen (-1)
Knight - strength. If life is below 25% will have a berserk rage. strength doubled
Chef - stomach. might EAT his defeated enemies. (+1 Life)
Pack Mule - weight. Kicks every enemy 2 spaces back. barely noticable.
Ranger - accuracy. Can attack enemies 1 space away.
Theif - speed. Can steal $ from enemies
Car Dealer - charisma. when in "finding a way out," he might just freak out and leave the level
Guard - defense. Will do a Spinning attack, 50% chance of hitting any monster nearby
Docter - Life. Will occasionally do a "Preemptive Autopsy," instant-kill on one guy

Actually, the berserk rage doubles speed, not strength. For more detail see the readme. However, there does seem to be a mistake in the readme as well: I'm pretty sure my characters will wait until they're at 1/4 health, not 1/3, before drinking a potion for less than its full effect. And there's one other thing it doesn't mention...

Ranger - accuracy. Can attack enemies 1 space away.

For some unexplained reason, enemies can also use the ranger's Bow Attack against him -- which makes his ability worse than no ability at all, since he still can't attack any enemy that can't attack him, and can be attacked by 8 enemies at once instead of 4.

This seems to be intentional too, since there are separate sounds for ranger-shooting-enemy and enemy-shooting-ranger, just as there are for the melee attacks. I know it's not just that enemies can shoot in the higher dungeons -- my latest character is getting shot in Floofy Woods, and IIRC one of my others (who I deleted as soon as I discovered this misfeature) got shot in Gnomey Plains.

Can anyone explain why it makes sense for the ranger to share his power with his enemies?

How often the random powers happen is based on your level. lvl 1 = 1%, lvl 50 = 50%. With the used car salesman, you'd go away instantly is you were lvl 100.

You'd go away as soon as you stopped hunting. And with the doctor you could kill any enemy with one hit. But I don't think I'd keep playing the same character that long...

Well, it depends on what the shift-Q place is like. I usually wait until I've gained five levels in each location before advancing to the next (to answer JonatX's original question -- a generalization of the "wait until level 5 and well equipped" in the readme), but I'm planning to gain at least ten in the Evilness Pit before using shift-Q.

I think 5 levels per location is about right, since one of my characters died the other day at level 15 in Rocky Dirtville, after another at the same level had survived in the same location until he gained another level.

Of course, it greatly varies on how you spend level-up points. Your strategy might mean you can go to the next dungeon after 5 levels, but other people's might not.
