OK, be nice. I just got Kid Mystic and have a few questions.

What is XP? And the numbers before and after the slash?

What is overworld - is that the hub?

Is there a way to kill the critters in the hub so I don't keep playing Monster Attack over and over again? Or is that the way it's supposed to be?

XP is how much more experiance points you need to get to the next level, by getting to the next level you gain more life and mana. The number on the left is how much XP you currently have and the number on the right is how much you need to get to the next level.
The overworld is the hub
And you can't kill the monsters in the hub, they are there so you get in random monster battles to gain coins and XP

If you save up your money, you can buy some better shoes in the shop so you can run away from the monsters if you don't want to fight them.

Are you calling me a coward?

Thanks, both of you. I was wondering what "Level Up" meant, but BryanSNK's answer explained that too!

The highest level you can reach is 50, by the way. To increase life & health even more after that, you have to buy those items at the shop that double them. Note that you need to either be on level 50 with both of those items or have caught Cheapy Fairy to cast the Armageddon Sword's spell. And you will need better shoes in the later levels because of some fast monsters and bullets. Heck, you can't even run away from Crazy Bushes without better shoes than those you start out with.

Yes,
When you just start Kid Mystic it is quite confusing as it is such a complex game,
But after the main 'tutorial' levels you start to get the hang of it!

Nope! When you have enough XP and money for the time being or you are trying to chase down a fairy, you are going to need to be able to outrun those random battles! You'll see for yourself soon enough!

By the way, every level (except those tutorials) have either a spell book, a fairy bell, or a piece of the Armageddon Sword. You can go back and get them, if you missed them, but not if you leave the chapter, so be careful not to leave a chapter until you have found 4 spellbooks, 4 fairies, and one sword piece.

I hated chasing down the fairies in Chapter 2 for that exact reason,
Those monsters are always where you don't want them to be!

 I know this topic is really old, but I want to say something anyway. I like to save up a little money, buy the second best boots and equip the runny fairy. It takes to long to save up enough to get the Air Lancelots so just use that combo, but imagine if you equipped a runny fairy with the Air Lancelots!

I find the Castle chapter hard for fairies. All those monsters!! The Horror!!

The compass thingy (I can't remember the name) in the shop is handy for fairy hunting! It tracks fairies in the main world, as well as fairy bells!
