Is it because of the evil Radish Guy (http://netnet.net/~dciango/story1.html)? (I have no idea what that is, I found it through a Google image search :-P)

No, it's because a punishment for certain illegal activities (which have been edited out by our moderator) in Greek times was to have a radish malletted up into a highly uncomfortable position (which has also been edited out by our moderator). And radishes were bigger back then, too!
It was on QI, a British comedy quiz show type thing.
