YAY! my own journal!

Im learnng C++!(I can make messages!and comments!(title)) gonna take a while to learn(int() junk, that iowhatsitsname file, all those semicolons) actually, i think the site im learning it from is teaching C first, then C++. the gamemaker program should be easy enough though.

My plans for the future:
all of this when i get MY computer back
1. make a website.(html, NOT those easy build websites(I HATE THOSE!))
2. use the demo version of gamemaker to make a few HUGE games, charging around 1-5 dollars each(a few free games, all chargable games with demos!) of course, all my friends at hamumu get my gamemaker games free!
3. stop for a while, try to get advertisements, if i dont think i can get a C++ program with the money i get, get the full version of gamemaker and make more games(BTW, jamul, your version of the program, how much does it cost?)
4. get the C++ program and everything else required to make a good game...(by then i should know enough to at least make a few small games)
5. learn more C++ if i dont know all of it.
6. make games
7. charge more for better games and roll in dough(chocolate chip, if i can afford it)
8. become bill gates

ok, so i wont reach the 8th one, but its a pretty good plan...right?

im gonna have to come up with a company name...."Whammydid software" ...thatl do. whammydid was my nickname when i played soccer.....

gonna move all this to the website once i get it up...

but for now...i have an idea for a game for the demo version of gamemaker..

i just need your permission to use certain names, jamul.

A pumpkin learns that an evil man, Bouapha, is trying to destroy the pumpkin population. he has to go on a heroic quest to stop him, but when he gets to bouapha, he learns that he is instead trying to stop a race of mutated pumpkins being created by dr. madguy, whos castle is being gaurded by *four to ten* orbs each having thier own theme (plants, fire, water) and each requiring a special weapon to defeat the all(weedkiller, water ballons, heat lamp) and once all of them are destroyed, you go into the castle for a bunch of puzzles leading to dr.madguy.

can i use bouapha?(he wont be playable, he'll just be there.)

back to lerning C++!

You'll have to do a different name...
Doubt that Jamul would give out rights to chacters name for something that you have to pay for...

But I may be wrong...

I'm not sure that price is the issue for programming games in C++; knowledge is more like it. All sorts of :) free :) compilers and libraries are available, but learning how to use them is not so easy... mod, mod, and mod if you want to make games; that's my opinion. Then again, I'm really quite ignorant; there are undoubtably a lot of gamemaking resources I don't know about.

Seriously, though, it's an interesting question; how much does a good (Visual) C++ compiler with lots of documentation, examples, libraries, etc. cost? I've always just used free compilers, since I've never needed C++ for anything more complicated than math.

id need alot of other stuff too(check out the faq, under "how do you make your games", it will give you an idea of what i need)

I really don't know why the heck I posted... I didn't really have anything to say except, "I have no idea what you need to develop games, but I'm going to guess that it's knowledge rather than money."

Looking through the list on the Hamumu FAQ, I found that most (but not all) of the stuff was either free, cheap, or had free (though inferior) substitutes. As for C++, if all you want is for your stuff to compile, I'm sure you can find a free program (or at least a "free" program.) If you want a good "developement environment" then maybe you better buy something.

* FMOD - A sound/music library
--$1000 or more to liscence, unless you're making a freeware game. But a quick google search reveals openAL, which appears to be free (?)
http://www.openal.org/
A bit more searching reveals that people don't like to rely on openAL for serious game programming.

* Allegro - A graphics library
--Free, if I remember right. openGL also comes to mind.

* 3DS Max - A 3D modelling program
--Blender is (was?) a good free renderer, if you can figure out how to use it. There was also a program called anim8tor or something. You could use those if you wanted 3D graphics for 2D games, or cutscenes or whatnot. As for actual modelling for a 3D game, I have no idea.

* Cool Edit 2000 - A sound editing program
--About $70 bucks, but if you're not doing anything too complicated:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/

* FL Studio - A music making program
--There are plenty of free music editors, but I'm not sure if any of them are any good. Then again, there's plenty of free music out there too.

* Paint Shop Pro 7 - An indispensable paint program
--Not much to say here. I vaguely recall that this is expensive ($100ish), but I'm not going to bother to look it up.

* Visual C++ 6.0 - Compiler and development environment
--A quick search turned up a dubious looking copy for $10. It lists at $50 or so... My mom once got Visual C++ 4.0 from work and it came with a nice manual and examples and such, so this might actually be worth buying, especially if you don't know Visual C++ (which does all kinds of crazy windows stuff, amongst other things)...

You can use Gimp for Windows (If you have windows)
It's free, and there's a bunch of features...
(Graphics editor...)

If you want to create 3D models and don't want to pay anything, download Anim8or from www.anim8or.com (http://www.anim8or.com/). It's a bit complicated at first, but if you take the time to read through the tutorials, you should get used to most of the functions. It's definately not the best 3D program there is, but at least it's free.

I'm learning to program with blitz 3D, it uses no opengl what so ever!
so after i'm done learning, i'm going to make games and sell them to make pity money!
