Hammered, can you give me a little help on that one, too? I don't know where to start on it!

The numbers stand for sequences of colored blocks. For instance, 12 2 1 to the left of a row means that the row has a segment of 12 blocks colored in, followed by a segment of 2 blocks colored in, followed by a single block colored in. It does not tell you where the blocks start, or how many un-colored blocks are in between each colored segment (except you know there's at least 1). The numbers in the column do the same for each column.
Unless a row or column is entirely colored in or entirely blank, you probably won't be able to color all the blocks at first. However, sometimes you can tell which blocks have to be colored in. For example, if a column has 8 squares, and contains a segment of 7, you know that the blocks in the middle have to be colored in (there's only 2 possible ways to fit a segment of 7 in a column of 8. either the top square is uncolored or the bottom square is uncolored. in either case, the 6 middle ones are colored in.) Once you've filled in the squares that have to be colored in, you will have more information to work on the rest.
I hope this helps as a start.

This definitely helped a lot. Thanks, McMonkeyMcBean!

Ok, I'm feeling silly, this is the first one I've gotten stuck on so far. Ironically, I was able to fill in the puzzle, doublechecked, and I'm pretty sure I have the grid right, but I can't figure out what it's supposed to be. Maybe my artistic imagination is suffering.

My eyes must be, thanks. That would have been my 10th guess (unforunately, I ran out of ideas after 6 :) )

dont suppose some one could pm me and give me a starting point? just the lay out of say one row or coloum... i know how to do these types of puzzles but this one i cant see any logical starting point to!! i mean theres 8 boxes down, if there was a column that was 6 1 then that would be easy the top 6 would be filled and the bottom 1 would be but theres no such luck on this!!

Try starting with the 12-2-2 row. If you work out the farthest possible left and right positions of the 12, any squares in both must be filled.
eg. If this row of 10 said '6', the black squares must be covered.

This puzzle frustrated me because I suck at the counted block part. I ended up with half a picture, but it was enough to guess the answer in 2 tries. These are some good hints now that I know the answer.

When I tried colouring it I noticed a few minor problems with the counts... such as 7 being an 8, and the 2 2 3 2 2 1 being a 2 2 3 1 2 1... I might be doing it wrong, but I managed to make the picture look alright!
the advice of starting with 12 2 2 really helped! after that it's just deducing witht he numbers... this is really fun!

Once I knew what I was supposed to do with the numbers (the first paragraph of McMonkey's post), this was a really fun puzzle.
The way I finally figured it out was to lay out the horizontal ones (with one space in between each number of blocks) so that the rows were sort of centered, and then shift each number around so the vertical was correct.

Once I figured out what TYPE of thing it was, and read over all the hints, it was fairly simple to figure out. The hardest part is figuring out how to DO the stupid thing.

These kinds of puzzles are called picross puzzles. You can go onto armor games.com and play the picross game to get a good idea. THey also have a really good explanation on how to do them

These kinds of puzzles are called picross puzzles.
They actually go under about 26 different names; but the most common is 'Paint by Numbers'.
