View Full Version : I got your number + black box

Anonymous
10-26-2005, 07:29 PM
I've worked it out mathmatically and I get zeros for all seven symbols. Not only that, but the question asks who is calling, not what's being called. The obvious answer I think is "you" (you're the one calling, right?). Unless this is a famous phone number, and as weird as 000-0000 is, I don't think anyone has it.

My other problem is with black box. I've tried every photo editing trick in the book, and it's still a solid color block. I can't think of what else to do. I even set the black box to be my wallpaper in case some subliminal image popped up, without any results.

I do have an actual Hamumu forum name (Deciple_of_Dumb, spelt wrong on purpose), so if anyone has hints (not answers!) it would be a big help is they could pm me.

Thanks, I've finished black box, but I'm still having trouble calling 000-0000.

While all zeros is a solution, there is a better one where each symbol represents a different number. Or, if you're old enough to remember back when a pay phone only cost 10 cents to use, you could probably guess the answer.

Surely I got your number is impossible for how do you work out more than one variable with out some solid numbers?? :?

Jamul

True - it is impossible to solve mathematically. You need to use deduction and more information than just the "equations". After all, it's not a math problem, it's a puzzle!

You can solve black box by opening the picture in Paint and clicking things. Nothing more complicated needed.

Big hint.

Also, keep in mind the other hints in other posts, especially the 'fill' one.

Still haven't gotten The number one :-\
The maths part you just ahve to keep bashing away at. It can be solved, and 000-0000 isn't the right answer. But once you've worked out the number, read the question again -- the answer to "who" can't be a number.

True - it is impossible to solve mathematically. You need to use deduction and more information than just the "equations". After all, it's not a math problem, it's a puzzle!

I must assume either that you're too young to have learnt about them yet, or that you didn't pay enough attention to your mathematics teacher in highschool; Decoding the symbols into numbers is done by solving the simultaneous equations we're given, which is to say that it's an algebra problem. I did get stuck on what I should do with the number until I looked in here, though. Thanks, guys!

You do reaslise that Jamul is the maker of these wonderful puzzles, so im sure he would know how they can and cant be solved... besides what numbers are you given to be able to do it as algebra?! there are no numbers just symbols, so even if you did manage to get any where in solving the symbolic algebra what numbers are you given? it would just be more symbols that have no meaning!

Jamul
03-17-2006, 08:27 AM
As far as I know, there aren't enough equations to solve the number of unknowns by pure algebra. But it certainly does help! Maybe there are tricks to build up more, that I don't know.

It can be solved that way, but there is more than one possible answer. Of course once you see them, one immediately jumps out to fit the rest of the puzzle. You do have to take the given that the numbers are limited to 0-9 with the puzzle being a phone based thing.

crassycatz
03-17-2006, 08:37 AM
so this is more of a trial and error thing then? substitue the first line of symbols for numbers and work down till all the numbers fit, going back and changing the first line if something doesnt fit!?

dannawii
03-17-2006, 08:47 AM
first I do agree that these are wonderful puzzles and the maker of them is obviously no ordinary person!!! but i have to say when it comes to this, algebra IS the way to solve it! sure they r just symbols but aren't x,y,z also just "symbols"!!!
if you look at the equations n work on them a bit u'll realise there r certain relations between the symbols and that they can be represented by numbers that will perfectly fit the equations u have!...
only then ull see the meaning of your symbols!

For "Got Your Number," I started doing the substitution math, and then I stopped when I thought of a famous number. The best hint I've seen so far is that growing up in the early 80s is an advantage. Otherwise, you might be left to slog through the math.

to work out mathematically start with the easiest equation, and keeping in mind that these are phone numbers, you will only have 3 possibilities for one of the variables in that eqation!... make assumptions and work your way through!

Hahah! I laughed so hard when I finally figured this one out... I spent an hour trying to figure it out algebraically... Then I lost my nerve; I tried my imagination, but I was disturbed.

For those of you who haven't figured it out yet, you don't need math. Who do you usually turn to when trying to solve one of these puzzles? Use them. I know you'll think I'm like the others before.

I registered just so I can reply to this... After some agonizing work I was able to solve "got your number" with only the math equations! By the time I found the answer I didn't even know why it is. So I'm just saying, it's possible if you simply solve the equations. Of course, you wouldn't be able to solve down to X=1 Y=2 without some guessing. But it is possible to deduce your symbols to only a few choices, and thats when you test if A=1, B=?. Then you run into things where the symbols HAVE to be a certain number to work...

If someone were to try to do it simply by math, my hints are: (hopefully not too revealing)
- look at the blue circles and yellow star.
- I first found the exact numbers for green star and yellow square.

Hope that helps!

There are actually two solutions with integers (other than 000-0000), just one of them repeats numbers. It took me the longest time to figure out the right one because I forgot zero was one of the numbers....

Yes, a hint on the first page really did the paradigm shift I needed. A shift of the paradigmal variety? If that is a word, 'paradigmal' is an ugly word indeed.

I managed to get 956-2216 for the number on that puzzle. Unfortunately, the University of Hawaii was not pleased when I called... Not particularly fond of that puzzle. Puzzles with a minimum of context are really tricky indeed. Tricky to make, that is.
