View Full Version : 42: Blue Shift
Would looking for an astronomical body be a reasonable line of enquiry, or am I way off track, here?

remember to consider every part of the puzzle, it may help nudge you in the right direction.
ps, kcaffrey and I designed Blue Shift
I've tried a number of image manipulations. One reveals text, another took advantage of the middle line, and revealed something almost but not quite recognisable.
So I suspect I'm stuck at the second stage cryptic crossword part of the puzzle :-(

For blue shift; If your resulting manipulations reveal number and letter, then you are on the right track. From there google will help.

This one was tricky - the title of the puzzle actually gives two clues to the answer. If you're into computer gaming, you may be familiar with the title in another context. That may help you know what to do with the answer you get to the visual puzzle.
Hope this helps.

If you are not finding this one elementary here's another hint, once you've decoded the first part of the puzzle, the letter is a common abreviation. Use the word rather than the abreviation when googling for better results.

One question:
Is it anything to do with Half Life, or am I on the wrong track?
One question:
I googled with that and stumbled on the answer.

Ask yourself where Hg is very close to Pb.

Okay, so I manipulated the image to get a letter and number. I think I know what the letter refers to when you mentioned where "Hg is close to Pb". I know what the connection is between the title and a certain computer game, and I know what the title of the computer game has to do with the letter, and why there should be a number.
But I can't find the answer! What am I missing?!

Well, you know the number letter combo, you know the game referenced a few times. Have you searched for those two items together to see what they reference? Once you figure out that, it's just a matter of finding out what has a matching number letter pair.

I know the game (or am pretty sure) But not sure exactly where to go from there I know the first part of the clue has to do with the table in front of me... But alas.....

I feel the same way. Its hard to know exactly what this puzzle is asking for. I know the game, got the number combo but...... I understand trhe concept of a blue shift. Tried googling and.....alas.. I hope its not one of those puzzles where I figured out how to solve it but am overlooking the obvious ( like "go fourth" I solved it in minutes but overlooked the correct answer since I used my computer and spent hours looking for other solutions). Any help on blue shift would be great please pm me

Too many hints for a single puzzle really causes the whole dumb community to decay, imho ..

I know nothing about the videogame mentioned throughout the forum, although I did deduce that the title of the puzzle refers to this specific game mentioned. I have found a number (I think), but could use a reply or PM with a bigger nudge, as I am so completely lost. Thanks.
Google is your best friend, always. Especially when you don't know what in the planet the rest of the people are talking about.

I have the number and letter had that straight away, I also understand what the symbol means mathematically and how that then relates to the title and the last clue "on this planet",
But what on earth is the number relating to I can only see one constant result given by any search engine google included, which in abbreviation and extended versions are not the answer.
I have used the symbol (in words) and the numberical (as number and as words) but alas to no avail.
I have read Wilkapida and each of the possiblities including the discussion comments.
Sorry to go on please a hint to the number reference. Or if it is so obviouse a hint would be too much to post please pm me.
Thanks in advance

Hehehe...
I scanned the title and skewed the rather good hint in the wrong direction. If you want to score big, then skip these hints and skim your science textbook. I'd say the chances of missing it then are, well... I'd say slim, but another word would fit better.

Yes, I was in the wrong direction with game.
I have the answer thanks to a very kind hint from a member.
For those still in need, concentrate on what BigNel said

Work on the letter first.

well, i can only find the number and the letter, but when i type this in, i get nothing of much significance to the answer (in my opinion) but when i think of the game that i think this is, i can only think, 17. any help would be appreciated.
this is a place where you can make spoilers. (jayisgames.com/archives/2006/03/dumb_the_game.php)

You need that part but you need to figure out where to look. There is one more piece of info (in plain site) that you need to use.

I just solved this puzzle, and I have to say that it was REALLY well done. It was kind of easy to start out, but got harder very quickly. There were some very good hints in this thread, and even if you don't understand the reference to the title, I'm sure google will be very helpful.

hahah i got it! This is a very clever puzzle. Btw if anyone's still stuck, the answer isn't about the game Half-life, but rather where Half-life gets it's name from...hope i didn't give too much away

I don't get it. I know the element, the scientific term and the number, but searching any combinations of those gives me nothing.

Arg! I get the number and the letter, but searching the periodic table of elements reveals that they don't go together! How much reading should I do? Goodness...

The letter does not stand for an element, but rather a word. A fairly generic one.

Does the letter SOUND like the same word?
minmay

No. It is, however, the first letter of the word. Think about a word that would often have a number before it.

type in the name of the game, followed by the number, then the word the letter represents. the answer should be the first or second search result.
