Dig through the forum and there are a couple of threads on this one, but get a thesaurus (or a site for such) and start there.

There's not much help out there, however, and I think some of the words might be puns and so forth, like dollar -> senses (not that that has got me very far).
Can someone who has solved this one PM me so I can check whether some of my leads are on the right track?
TIA.

Use direct word subtitutes for the big words, try the simple ones first, and see if you can get it to rhyme.

Can I just ask what "plow-ancestry" might be a reference to? Should it be separated into "plow" and "ancestry"?

That's what I was assuming. What I tried was to stick this into a babelfish translator and go like English>Dutch>French>Italian>German>English and see if it changed the meaning, but not really. This looks like one of those poorly translated Japanese movie titles or something where they just substitute words without thinking about the meaning. Nothing I put together reminds me of anything though, the first line HAS to have something to do with horses, because there's no other way to translate equine, but I don't know any horse quotes.

Ok, I finally got it. I was right, plow-ancestry needs to be separated into two words, but once you "translate" them separately, the resulting two words can be combined or hyphenated.
A few other hints that I found helpful:
1) As jwm mentioned above, some of the lines do rhyme.
2) Thesaurus.com was helpful for some of the synonyms, but not all of them. A lot of the substitutions were non-obvious, which is probably on purpose because it makes you think of alternate meanings, but there was one case in particular where there were some liberties taken with it (changing a word ending, for instance)
3) Google does have wild card searches. It uses a somewhat fuzzy algorithm so you might occasionally get some extra words in there (i.e. having one asterisk does not guarantee one word), but this was how I ended up solving the puzzle (guessing a few words, and plugging it into the wild card search). For instance, if you search for "I * Sam", you would get back any lines with "I love Sam" and "I am Sam" and "I hate Sam", etc.
Good luck.

The first line pretty much seems to translate word for word, probably no need to rearrange the words as suggested in earlier posts to make it clear. The words seem to be more and more of a stretch as the poem goes along, for example, some pairs of words seem to translate loosely as opposed to individually. My advice is to concentrate on either the first or last line, they are the most simple to translate. PM me if you need help, this puzzle is a frosty beast. Oh, and glacion's third hint is priceless!
Agreed on that last bit, I was miles away from solving this puzzle until that third hint was pointed out to me.

I'm really having trouble getting started on this one... Is this a phrase which was written by someone famous? The only word I can think to substitute for Equine is Horse or Pony... am I on the right track with that one? I don't even know where to go beyond that.

Yes you are on the right track...
My advice is to translate the first sentence only. If you hit the right combination, the google search will be easy. To give you a small hint without giving too much away, concentrate on the word "duty." It was the only word that gave me trouble, but then again doing the wild card search mentioned above would be helpful. Hope this helps.

Would I be on the right track in thinking it's a song or a jingle?

If anyone is still having problems with this, try "translating" the first couple of words. Other hints have stated that it is definitely about horses. The small words seem to be the same. That leaves one word to have the first three. If you use Google and enclose your search with quotes it will find that exact phrase. I was able to use just a couple of words and recognize the passage in the Google summaries. Searching for "recycling truck backwards" will find all pages with that exact phrase.

Keep in mind the "correct" version may not be on the first page of your google results :)

I googled for the first 3 words and got it. Use an online thesaurus and you'll be good to go. Man, that one eluded me for so long.

Well, this thread is lovely, but I have a long way to go to get my DQ up.

I tried foccusing on the last line, but it got me no where, my suggestion is to use a thesaurus and google the first line. It got me there right away.
