How was Black Box made?

Hello,

I recently stumbled upon "Dumb" and have really enjoyed the puzzles. I figured out Black Box the other day and really liked the concepts and was hoping to use the concept for a different application (a geocaching puzzle). However when I attempted to use the concept I was not able to make it work correctly, so I was wondering if someone could offer some advice (pm) on how the puzzle was created.
