(This is the exact same post I had posted above before Hammered deleted it minus about 3-4 non-English words, which is and has always been completely in English aside from those few words; the entire post, even the English part, was deleted for absolutely no reason (the foreign words could have been edited out, which would have saved me some trouble), so I'm reposting it.)
Trying to "translate" some things to German, I've noticed that the Google translation service is much better than it used to be; "Kid Mystic" doesn't become a "mystic goatling" anymore. "Alien life form" still becomes a "form of foreigner-life", though... meh. </original post> EDIT: As for weird-seeming foreign words, German has quite a few words that must seem funny to English-speakers; "good", for example, is "gut" in German :D (Not pronounced like the English word, but spelled that way) What makes that worse is that there's a German meat manufacturer which is the German word for "good" plus the name suffix "fried"; "gutfried", i.e. fried guts. Ew. Last edited by SpiderPumpkin; 11-15-2008 at 04:15 PM. |

Did you know the word kid means a baby goat?

Yeah, but "child" is a much more common meaning, so "kid" always being translated as a baby goat normally had really weird results. (Google also used to always translate "guy" in the sense of "guy rope" :P)
EDIT: Sillyman, I know you can call foreigners "aliens" in English, but there are completely different words for foreigners and "space aliens" in German, and when it's used in the sense of space alien in a text and you translate it to German through Google, it always comes out as foreigner :D I know that's mostly not Google's fault, but it's funny, especially when a text is talking about earth being "attacked by aliens" and such. EDIT2: Actually, it still completely messed up the "alien life form" thing by translating "alien" as a noun rather than an adjective (thus generating that "foreigner-life" garbage). Alien=foreigner. So when you're referring to little green men, say aliens from outer space. Or aliens from (insert place here). Along those lines, my dad has a card in his wallet from the government declaring him to be an alien.
