Default Blackduck's BHE - Termites: The Flash Version

You guys all thought I canceled my BHE, but BAM, my BHE is done! Bet you didn't see that coming. Anyways after 7 weeks of work on it. This is a flash game inspired by the all popular, all awesome (not my surprise, it's an actual Hamumu game) Termites game.

Instructions are provided in game, so you can learn how to play from there on out.

By the way, I sent an updated version to Jamul. If you want to know if it's updated or not, press P while you're in the overworld. If a pause menu appears, it's updated.

Well, just in case anybody is interested on seeing the progress of this game along the 7 weeks that this game took to make, I'll just post them here, and don't worry, they get shorter as they go along.

Warning: A lot of the old version of the game under this text will lag A LOT.

Week 1
Hey, Blackduck here with something new and interesting for you guys! Every Sunday (even though this one is late) I will be making a post about progress on Flash games that I make. Starting this week, and ending I don’t know when (probably depending on if you guys like this), Now, this doesn’t sound that interesting right now, but that does mean you guys will be able to make suggestions to the games I make via the comment system, and it will also mean that there will be lots and lots of playable stuff, probably one thing per post, at least.

So to kick it off with a completed start, Saturday morning, at 1AM, somebody told me to make a breakout type game (the thing where you’re a paddle and you have a ball that bounces off of it and you have to break these floating bricks over you). Anyways, I didn’t really want to spend a lot of time on this, because I was working on this other game which will be mentioned later. With that said, I got a working version in 3 hours, then spend like 30 minutes fixing bugs after it’s release found here (that one has the bugs fixed too).
Anyways, Now for the real thing. There’s this contest one this other site that I frequent that’s a Halloween contest, you have till Halloween to make whatever you want, so I chose to make a flash game. The game will be called Termites: Flash Edition and is based off the game called “Termites” on the site. Termites will be a 2.5D adventure RPG, where you play as a termite on his quest to quench his hunger for Halloween candy. So far, this is what I’ve got.

Game

Arrow keys to move, P to pause. This may not seem like much, but it took me a handful of hours to do. I’m quite satisfied with the graphics, except for the termite, which could look better. There will be 4 stats: strength, armor, life and brain (magic). You will have 8 equipment slots consisting off: 2 legs, 4 arms, 1 head and one body, since it’s a termite and all. You will also be provided with 12 slots of inventory space.
My goals for the next update are instructions, maybe an intro movie, and hopefully I’ll get to actually making an enemy you can fight.
Any suggestions or feedback? Just comment on this entry, and I’ll read it!

Week 2
Hey, Blackduck here for week two! So, I’ve pretty much only been working on the termites games, but with great progress. Even though I didn’t make any intro movie, let alone make instructions, I have done other things that are equally great, or better.
So for starters, you now see the Neptune Productions thing along with a play button and the name of the game. Also, a very awesome thing I did was add a “name your character” with every letter, symbol and number my keyboard has! Your name appears in fights and in the pause menu. Maybe it’ll make an appearence in dialog if this game gets some!

Second, I changed the menu. It’s still got the overall look, but now the inventory is shrunk to only 4 slots and your equipment is now only 2 arms, 1 leg, 1 body and 1 head. But, I did add a Health/Magic section that shows your health and magic (of course) along with a visual drawing.
I also changed the outline of the map made out of the plants a bit so that it wasn’t a straight line. I think it makes it look bit more realistic.
Now for the thing I spent the most time one, the fighting system. There’s still no way to access it via fighting an enemy, so you’ll have to press enter while you’re in the map.
Not the most artistic thing, but I’m not that good at art. So you’ve got the character and the enemy both with HP/Magic bars. You also have your level over it and your name on the HP. It also tells you how much out of how much your HP/Magic is at, but not for the enemy.
Under your character, you’ve got the fighting menu. Arrow keys to move, enter to select, and shift to go back. You can’t use spells/skills yet, but you unlock a magic spell for every point you invest in brain, and same thing for skill but with strength. (although you can’t upgrade those yet, and none of them work anyways except for Power Bite anyways).
You can always you Defend, which makes the enemy do his damage – your armor x2, instead of only x1. Or you can attack, which does 3dmg + your str, but nobody can die yet, so it doesn’t matter.
Even though this fighting this doesn’t seem like a big update, I spent quite a bit of time on it, and made it in a way that after it’ll be done, all I have to do to add a new enemy is make a new image and change its stats. I can also add new spells for that enemy alone really easily, which helps.

So without further delay, here’s the game.

My goals for next week are probably about the same. Instructions, maybe an intro movie, and finishing the battle system. Though you never know what will happen!

Week 3
Hey, Blackduck here with the big ol’ week three!So far, this game is going great! Much better than I thought it would turn out. I didn’t work on it this week as much as I wanted to, butit’s ended up still being quite productive. So to start off, there’s actually a candy you can run into and battle. I haven’t even touched the battlesystem, so that’s still the same.But when you win a fight, you go to this new screen, showing how much exp you got from the candy and the equipment it dropped! It’s all functionalexcept the inventory, so you can feel free to equip those items. Although when you level up you get skill points, you can’t use them yet.You also can’t see the name/type/whatever of all the equipment, nor do you get stat bonuses from them, but it’s all in good time.
I’ll just leave this update at that, since most people don’t read it all anyways, and give you your weekly dose of Termites: Flash Edition!

Week 4
Hey, Blackduck here as we end week 4. I probably didn’t work on Termites as much this week as I would have wanted to, but I’ve done some painful copy pasting action this week, which I’m glad to have put out of the way. First of all, I finished every drawing that I needed! Not really that big of a task, because I was only missing a few. What was a big task is making the inventory! That’s right, the inventory is now fully functional, so if you want to carry something with you, but you don’t want to equip it, you’ve got a handy 5 slot inventory. I also made that when you put your cursor over and item, it tells you it’s name, stat bonus, description and who it’s named after, which is quite fun to read. Lastly, I made that equipping stuff actually gives you stat bonus, such as increasing armor/strength/brain/life.

So anyways, here’s the game: Game

Week 5
Hey guys, Blackduck here again with week 5. Well, there’s only two weeks left. I was hopping to get a lot of work in throguhout the week, but my power supply got fried by a power surge. Luckily, I got that fixed by Saturday! So I still got a good amount of work. My progress for this week was very artistic. The first thing you’ll notice is the intro! That was a pain to make, but I got it all down, and it looks great! (in my opinion). I also finally got around to add a little loading thing that you don’t even notice because it’s amongst the black frames in the Neptune Productions thing. It doesn’t look like it does much of a difference, but it does, trust me. I also finished making all the attacks/spells and stuff, so now the fighting system is complete. Something awesome that I did, which you probably also noticed quite quick is the music! Not he best soundtrack, but I made it all myself. Lastly, the termite looks a bit more termite like.

That’s it for this week, next week I’ll try to get a lot more maps in and stuff, that way it has more than just a minute or two of gameplay, but you’ve got to admit, you can have a lot of fun with equipping those items!

Game

Week 6
Hey, Blackduck with the delayed week 6! Luckily for you guys, this was delayed for a reason! This game now features 8 maps with 6 unique types of enemies. I also fixed a lot of subtle bugs, that you guys probably didn’t notice. I also pretty much doubled the termite’s speed, but with all the lag this game causes, it doesn’t look like a big difference. If you forgot how to play, you can read through the handy instructions for explanation, then departure on your sacred quest! Although the game isn’t done yet, you can get all the way to the house. After that, there will only be 4 maps, 1 including the boss map, so the game should be done soon! That’s a good thing, since this game has to be done by the 31st. So when that happens, you guys will be able to play the real deal!

I know they're strong, but they're normally aren't strong enough to kill you if you have full HP, or a bit less, which is why I put a healing pad beside where the Candy Corn is, besides, he's great exp.

Are there artifacts for each item slot?
I'm missing the weapon and the armor and have been searching for a while, and that brings up the question above.

EDIT: Just got the weapon. Still searching for that armor though.

There are 5 artifacts, one for every part of the body, and there's one super artifact.

Glad to see you had a Best Halloween Surprise after all! And it's also nice to see everyone's items being used! I liked the Candy Corn's eye laser attack. Pew pew! A few problems though: the music is pretty annoying. The lag gets pretty bad inside the house (it's fine in the field though). Unfortunately, the (quite unexpected ) final boss kicked my butt when I tried fighting it (I was level 8 with all artifacts... I didn't find a super artifact, though)

You can press P to open up the menu, and turn off the sound from there. Also, the house lags more because it required much more walls than the outisde, since outside I could separate them all a little, but in the house, they had to all be side by side. I know last boss is kind of, well, really hard, and it doesn't help that spells are broken on the version here! (unless they're broken in the good way, I forget).

I am going to finish this game and find every artifact.. just to see if any of them are Stick based. I will be angry if there isn't any stick based items.
