You don't unzip the .jar you unzip the .rar. What you want to do is run the .jar with Java Platform SE Binary and make it open jar files with this by default.
What I imagine happened is that you have it setup so it opens Java files with 7zip by default so you can mod Minecraft (since Minecraft is made with Java) instead of it running the program.

Whoops! What I think happened was that for the non-CE version when I checked which byte to start at I was using a borked version of LL2 so the values didn't match. I tried updating it so feel free to try and now and tell me if it works.
Also I'm aware some methods of running the program give you the palette error (such as if you do Open With, I think) although I can't seem to find a way to fix that.
