Default Official Jack Tompson Thread

I used to think Jack Tompson was okay until he got annoying. Sure, he was okay around the time of hot coffee, but then he got to be a nuisance for 3 reasons so far.

1. He was going to donate 10k to a charity if someone made a game where you had to kill the president of the company Take2.
2. He referred to the game bully as a columbine simulator.

Oh, also,

4. Jack Tompson stated that the Virginia Tech Shooting was inspired by VIDEO GAMES!!! There were ABSOLUTELY NO VIDEOGAMES FOUND AT THE ASSAILANT'S APARTMENT!

Not to mention he constantly harasses various well known video gamers, is under the sickening impression that if you play any game at all, you're violent, attacked The Sims 2, etc.

The guy's an extremist. And, like ALL extremists, is dangerous. -.-

More to it than that;

Quote:
In 2005, he wrote an open letter to Entertainment Software Association president Doug Lowenstein, making what he described as a “a modest video game proposal” (an allusion to the title of Jonathan Swift's satirical essay, A Modest Proposal) to the video game industry: Thompson said he would donate $10,000 to a charity designated by Take-Two CEO Paul Eibeler if any video game company would create a game including the scenario he described in the letter. The scenario called for the main character, whose son was killed by a boy who played violent video games, to murder a number of industry executives (including one modeled on Eibeler) and go on a killing spree at the E3. Video game fans promptly began working to take Thompson up on his offer, resulting in the game I'm OK - A murder Simulator. Afterwards, he claimed that his proposal was satire, and as of May 2007, he has not made his proposed donation. In response, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the creators of gaming webcomic Penny Arcade and of the children's charity Childs Play, stepped in to make the donation instead, writing in the memo field of their check, “For Jack Thompson, Because Jack Thompson Won't.” Afterwards, Thompson tried to get Seattle police and the FBI to investigate Holkins and Krahulik for orchestrating "criminal harassment" of him through articles on their site. Other webcomics have regularly incorporated references to Thompson, alluding to this incident as well as others.

Knocking the Sims 2 for the reasons he did was stupid. There is nothing there. Also, why does he resort to this nonsense just to prove stupid points!? Also, Penny Arcade did nothing wrong! They should lock up Jack Thompson for harassment! Down with the evil extremist!

Well, I can see his point about attacking Sims 2(Theres a "blur" everytime your character is in the shower or on the toilet or something. There *USED* to be a code where you can remove it, but the characters were like barbie dolls. The makers of the Sims removed the code in an update or something.)

His idiocy lies in not actually playing the game to test it himself before going off on his little crusade. But then again, according to him, this will make him fly off the handle and kill everyone.

Yup. According to him, if you so much as touch a controller connected to a system with GTA in it, you will go insane, kill people, steal their money, and buy better weapons with the stolen money. Video games do not cause violence! Bad judgment causes violence!

Tabloids are Jack Thompson aren't to be taken seriously. PCGamer this month contained a quote from a newspaper claiming that the latest technology was called something like brain-to-game, with the game being 'mindball'. This game involved the two players using their minds to control a ball into the opponent's goal, and this was clearly dangerous. I'd quote directly, but it's downstairs, and I'm lazy.
I have no doubt that there is no such technology. Tabloids just make these things up to sell papers. Unfortunately, games lose out. If only people just followed the age guidelines.

I've played and beaten Resident Evil 4 2 times but I never went out and shot people with guns or anything.

Direct mental control of games has existed for many years. There was a product they sold for a while several years back that did it, where you stuck your finger in it. I saw a TV special on a flight simulator you could fly via brainwaves. It's very hard to control! The technology exists, and I saw several things recently that say it is being messed around with again in fairly big ways, but it's so hard to use and limited that I doubt that will go anywhere.

I'm just kidding! But if I really did believe that, then yes, it would support his case. Though I actually don't have any console.

Just my trusty computer.

I am going to see if I can disprove Jack Thompson. I am going to play Resident Evil 4 for 6 hours then walk to the silverware drawer and see if I get any nasty impulses....

No, wait - you first have to walk to it before playing, to see if you had any impulses to begin with.

Too late. I contemplated doing something horrible to Jack Thompson involving spoons.

Oh.... I want one of those flight simulators! It sounds pretty intersting. Mind games are fun!
