Drat! Outdone again! 10:34 AM -- Tue January 2, 2007

I like to promote Hamumu as a company that really pays attention to the fans and helps you out immediately and thoroughly and all that stuff. We sure are much better than any "big" company, by a margin so wide you can yell things across it and they echo. Or are we...?

I am very impressed with ArenaNet, the makers of Guild Wars! They totally beat me this year by sending out Thank You cards by mail, hand-signed by the development team, to 1000 people that they recognized from online forums as having been real supporters of the game. That is so cool, and think how exciting it would be to get one of those! That is definitely fan service, and not in the anime sense.

The closest I came to that this year was backwards - Isparklesalot (a member of our forum) sent me a Christmas card! Thank you! Now I know how exciting it is to get one of those!

So, now it is 2007. I guess I need some goals. My only goal last year was to read 15,000 pages. I got pretty close, but I was 1,500 short by the end. I just get very busy and have trouble finding time to read. I always mean to do it in bed, but by the time I go to bed, I'm tired! So my solution this year is to not set a reading goal. If there are interesting things to read, I shall read them because they compel me to. It's not like I don't get enough brain exercise with the thousands of words I read every day on the computer just doing my job! So, forget reading. What else?

Exercise, we'll throw that in there. But you don't need to hear about it. Very necessary though! How about business stuff? That's what you want to know about! I will finish LL2. My goal is to release it for real by the end of January. Then the Collector's Edition done by the end of February (but maybe not released, I'll need to get the CD production done and all). That leaves 10 months to make another game. Sounds pretty reasonable. So let's say one more game released in 2007.

I decided a while back just how I would do the next game. A fun experiment: design it all on paper first, and then I am not allowed to stray from the design at all. Not that I can't do anything else (like a monster or item idea that comes up), but all the crazy extra modes and bonus features I always throw on at the end really drag out development. None of that - I have to come up with all the crazy modes in advance! No, I will actually try to keep it focused. You know how much extraneous LL2 there was? All 3 'crafting' things, achievements and modifiers, artifacts, talents (that was a doozy!), the split path of the game (so twice as much middle game to make), and I can't think of any more, but there's more. If you conservatively call that 1 month per thing in that list, that's 5 months! So we'll see how this experiment goes. I'll probably just front-load that phase and have a list of fifty different game modes to make.

So, those are modest goals. I think they can be achieved with ease as long as I continue to resist buying WoW. But resolve weakens on that front every day...

  Giftbot! 10:51 AM -- Wed December 20, 2006

Giftbot had a major malfunction in his electropropulser drive earlier this week, and has been in the shop in Giftopia, undergoing extensive repairs. This has prevented him from appearing in the chatroom for the past two days. The good news is, he will be back today, with a double load of gifts! While the tech crew worked on him in the shop, he actually installed a backpack-mounted secondary gift launcher himself. So today is the day to rack up serious giftbot rewards. In fact, for the first time, Giftbot is announcing his schedule! He will be in at noon Pacific Time today (that is 3:09 from right now). So come by! If the room is full when you get there, hang around. Giftbot has a tendency to deal harshly with those who don't win at his games. You can try to get in when someone else is kicked out!

  BRR! 07:20 PM -- Sat December 16, 2006

I haven't journaled in quite some time. I had a legitimate reason for that (which some of you know!) and many illegitimate reasons. But anyway, tis the season to be busy with stuff around the house. We just put up some lights outside. I practically got frostbite out there! Not sure why exactly we waited until dark to do that...

We also shipped out all the presents we had to ship to other people today (not counting the constant flood of keychains I'm having to send out), so all of our shopping and shipping is all done. It's rather nice. For the next week and a half, we just sit around with all the presents in place and await their opening.

All that, and Loonyland 2! It's been fun tweaking the skills and stuff to make things more balanced. Less fun to fix bugs, but nice to know they're getting fixed and it's closer to done. I've slacked immensely on the ending movie. I do have part of it done, which is progress. It's the only thing that's actually not done in the game. Everything else is done and just maybe a wee bit buggy. Ah, my hands are thawing out, they feel like they're burning. Good eventide to you all!

  Shush 02:54 PM -- Fri December 1, 2006

I'm having so much fun! And working so hard! I hope you all enjoy both Duhcember and Loonyland 2, which are both finally here after enormous hours of labor in the past few days (LL2 also required a year of labor before that, and will still require some months more to be totally done). Duhcember's got tons of stuff going on, click the big logo up top to see! You never know where you might find secret codes for it. Setting up that whole puzzle is really fun for me. I'm not entirely done yet.

I'm also excited about the fan art contest. I'm really hoping to see some unique things - will anybody make me a movie? A song? Something I can't even think of myself? I hope so. I want to see some wacky stuff.

Visit that Duhcember page to learn about it all, and to get your coupon code to save 10% on the preorder of Loonyland 2 that I just know you're about to order right this second! Get to it!

Merry Duhcember!!

  Nano nono 04:44 PM -- Tue November 28, 2006

I sure haven't journaled in a loooong time. Yes, I gave up on Nanowrimo weeks ago. It just came down to the importance of getting LL2 done. Or that's what I told myself. I did have a constant stream of ideas that I could keep the book going with, but it wasn't something I really wanted to work on, or cared about the end product of, and whenever I worked on it I felt like I was wasting Loonytime. So I did Loony things instead. Which is good. That is going very very well and is really almost done now.

So that and other surprises are in store in the near future. Hooray! I was just crumbled to death in the forum game of Christmas Mafia. I am sad about that, because I was a goodguy! Actually, I'm more sad that I never get to use my awesome ninja powers. It is kind of relaxing being out of it now though. Less stress!

So despite the long delay, I apparently have nothing meaningful to share at the moment. Stay tuned for more soon. By the way, today is the last day to vote on Winter Wackiness names, so you could do that!

  Nano Day 9 01:27 PM -- Thu November 9, 2006

How did it get to day 9 already!? But, I have picked up the pace. I am at 11,270. The most useful thing for me has been WackieWatty, who is always slightly ahead of me, forcing me to push on to make a good example. Or to stick it to him.

I actually don't really like my story. That's a bit disheartening, to think that I'll toil for a month, crank out all these words, and then just throw it away because it's just no good. Last year, I wrote stuff that was very bad, very bad indeed. But I liked the story. Theoretically, I could take that and edit/rewrite into something splendiferous. But this year, from what I can tell, such a thing is highly unlikely. But who knows? The miracle of novel writing is that things change dramatically and unexpectedly. Already, many twists and turns have jumped into places where they weren't intended, and things are going differently than I had envisioned. But it comes together. And that's what you discover doing this - that stories write themselves, if you can just keep pushing on. It's all in the microdecisions. My characters were sitting at a house waiting for the owner to return, so I had to decide what they'd do. They watched TV (of course), which led to a whole new twist, because the guy who lives there is an anti-government survivalist militia nut, so the characters learned interesting things from his TV (he gets illegal channels from outside the country, because in my story, the government doesn't allow foreign ideas to corrupt citizens).

So onward I must push!

Slowly we go 06:46 PM -- Wed November 8, 2006

Nanowrimo is slow. I'm just not full of verve and spangly pizzazz about this story. It's kind of annoying, because I know what needs to happen and what to write, but I just don't feel like doing it. But a bigger issue is that I'm very busy! I'm trying to get LL2 done here. I'm tempted to drop out of Nano to max out my LL2 time, but I don't want to give up, and furthermore, like I said, I know what I need to write! Sigh. I am at 9158 words. I spent my writing time today setting up Word to make my writing look like a novel. Now there are way fewer words on a page, since the pages are much smaller, so I feel like I'm making progress. I think it was a good move.

I had a bunch of LL2 comments here, but I have moved them to Sneak Peek where they belong!

Sneak Peek: Loonyland II: Winter Woods 06:46 PM -- Wed November 8, 2006

Same pic. But LL2 is getting so close. I keep finding things that are basically done. I drew a "P" tile from my bag of tiles that tell me what to do. That meant I had to do artwork (P is for picture!). Only, I found very little artwork to do! I ended up just adding some arrows that the spell selector needed, and updating the mushroom graphics a little to make them appear to stick to the ground more (hardly noticeable, it turns out, but marginally better). I also could've done artwork for the final boss, which is the only other piece of artwork left to do, but my art time was up. Other nearly done things include sound and music (just a couple sound effects to go, for the last few bosses), levels (just need to put in a few presents and make the final boss battle and the area that leads up to it), skills and talents (all done!), and quests (all done except of course the final boss slaying). The only real glaring absence is the bonus stuff and menus - there's currently no way to adjust volume or set your keys or any stuff like that, and there are no game modifiers or other such things to unlock. I hate doing that stuff (not the modifiers! No way! The menus and configuration options).
