Vote For Avatar Bits! 12:16 PM -- Sun October 24, 2010

This is the first of many journal entries today! The Bits Help Everybody contest has closed for entries, and it's time to place your votes for your favorites. The forum only allows 10 options in a poll, and we had 18 entries, so I had to get a little creative. Thusly:

On October 29th, the top 5 entries from each half will face off in a final round to determine the winners!

So Many Projects 07:49 PM -- Sat October 23, 2010

I sure haven't been blogging... it's because I'm working on a big pile of projects, all of which are secret to one degree or another. But I'm going to share a little bit about each one! How about them bananas?

This game may not even appear here on Hamumu, but I'll point you to it when it's done. It's a fairly "adult" game, but while it's a bit edgy, it doesn't have anything far outside Hamumu rules. Maybe a bit iffy though. It will probably be the first one done of the ones I'm working on. My WoW buddy is handling almost all of the art duty on it, so that's why it's made of very classy photography instead of goofy monsters with big eyes. In case you can't guess, this is a point & click adventure, somewhat of an "escape the room" game. It's fun to make those, I find!

And please note that quite a few of the Halloween contests require you to submit your entry in SIX HOURS from right now!! Don't miss your chance at mondo yerfbucks (especially the Costume Contest where top prize is a thousand yerfbucks!).

  15 Games I Can't Forget 06:56 PM -- Tue October 5, 2010

I was challenged on Facebook (well, a general challenge was issued) by Andy Schatz of Pocketwatch Games with "The rules: Don't take too long to think about it. 15 games you've played that will always stick with you. List the first 15 you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes."

Well, in the span of about 5 minutes, I was flooded with more thoughts and nostalgia than my fingers could keep up with. Eventually I just had to stop myself (and argh, I know I'm forgetting 10 things where I would go "Oh, that changed my life!!" if I sit and try to think more) to avoid wasting the whole day. Then I picked a top 15 most memorable - not the best games, or the most popular, but the ones that are really stuck in my head and a part of me. These are the games, in no particular order at all:
  • WoW
  • Diablo 2
  • Tetris
  • Tony Hawk 1-4
  • Ratchet & Clank 1-4
  • Wasteland
  • Herzog Zwei
  • Doom
  • Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
  • Ultima I-IV, especially III
  • Speedball II
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Mortal Kombat (1 and 2)
  • Rock Band
  • Unreal Tournament
And if you're curious, which you aren't but I need to get it out of my head, here's the rest of the list of ones that just popped into my head in those first couple minutes (actually there were dozens more, but I couldn't type that fast and I rejected ones that I knew weren't really that memorable to me):

Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein 3D, Star Saga One, Dragon Wars, Dragon Warrior, Armada, Simcity, Civilization, Ninja Gaiden, Strider NES (not the arcade or Genesis versions, totally different), Portal, Zork III (owned the hint book!), Breakout, Space Invaders, Qix, Attaxx, Warcraft 2, Dune II, Ghostbusters (Apple II), Legend of Kage, Kid Niki, Thunder Force III, Burgertime, Pac-Man, Street Fighter 2 (many versions), X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Double Dragon, Asteroids, Wizard's Crown, Might & Magic, The Black Cauldron, Dragon's Lair, Desert Strike, Zangband, ADOM, Torchlight, 1942, Raiden II, 19XX (actual title, not generalizing), Ice Climber, Pro Wrestling (NES), Rush N Attack, Altered Beast, Guardian Heroes, Last Battle, Wings of Fury, Captain Goodnight, X-Com, Interstate 76, Metroid, Sly Cooper 1-3, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, Wing Commander, Sonic The Hedgehog, Ghouls n' Ghosts (or was it Ghosts n' Goblins? One of those quite thoroughly in my head, just not the title. Also Super Ghouls n' Ghosts), Forgotten Worlds.

What about you?

Behold, Hallowed Extravaganza!! 10:53 AM -- Sat October 2, 2010

This year is clearly going to be the Best Halloween Ever. But you have to participate to make that happen. Participate in what? Well....
So if that's not enough to celebrate the Best Halloween Ever, well... then add your own celebrations on our Forum! The more, the merrier. Scarier.

Be Still My Heart! 10:46 PM -- Sat September 25, 2010

Got an iPhone or an iPod Touch? Like tapping on it? Then you will love Still Pond for iPhone! It's free, which is a great price, and it's fun, which is a great thing for a game to be. It has some differences from the PC, with some unique bonus modes and tweaked gameplay (so you don't break your phone trying to click on burritos). Check it out!

Still Pond was ported to iPhone by Tapnik.

Robot Wants Ice Cream! 07:12 PM -- Fri September 24, 2010

Play Robot Wants Ice Cream RIGHT NOW!!!

With that out of the way, let me also add that you should go on Kongregate and rate it 5 stars so I win vast riches: Click here you know you want to just do it go for it now

And with that out of the way, ahhhhhh. A game is released. It's so nice to have another one out of the way. I probably should update the History page sometime to mention these things. Crazy time of year this is. I made a list a couple days ago of projects I was actively working on, and there were 5. Then I got another one to do for the Boy Scouts again shortly after that, so it became 6. Good news is it's back down to 5 as of right now!

Sadly, that 6 doesn't include anything special for Halloween. Actually, I had it as 7, with "Surprise Halloween game - witch platformer? Card-based D&D thing?" but that string of letters is the extent I've worked on it, so my 5 legit projects are going to take precedence. I am absolutely swamped at this point, so what I think I will do is just re-activate the old Great Pumpkin's Field once again for this year, if it still works. As I recall, it was pretty buggy and weird, but it was fun to play! So that'll be fun. I really don't have time to burn on anything new, I'm afraid. We'll see what other tiny surprises can be creeped in there a little bit. Everybody knows Halloween is the Hamumu Holiday!

Breaking Radio Silence 11:22 PM -- Wed September 22, 2010

I was informed today by somebody that they were a big fan, and read my journal every day. I felt really bad that they kept reading the exact same words over and over, so I figured I'd post something new to mix it up a little.

It has been quite some time since I blogged anything! I have been busy working, haven't really had anything shareable. I'm working on a ton of projects at once right now. Not much I can say about most of them at this point. I can tell you Robot Wants Ice Cream is completely done and shipped. I'm just waiting for the sponsor to post it so I can post it too! It's a fun one for sure.

October is fast approaching, folks... the question is, are we too busy to celebrate!?

Hey, remember Like? 05:52 PM -- Wed September 8, 2010

Man, for all you people who used to really enjoy Like and his catchphrases and whatnot back in the 70's, I've added a t-shirt to our Cafepress store in honor of him (two versions!):

I think you'll like them! See, that's the kind of clever humor we all remember. Well, not all of us. Whatever happened to Like anyway? Seems like nobody even remembers he existed.

In Hamumu news, Robot Wants Ice Cream is done except for the music, and I think we will have a release within 2 weeks or so if all goes well. After that I'm working on a game based on, but more interesting than, Two Roads, which was commissioned specifically by a fellow indie. Should be an interesting bit of collaboration!

Robot Wants Victory! 03:51 PM -- Mon August 23, 2010

I had a super hard time picking single winners in the Robot Wants Contests, so firstly, I may make as many as 3 non-boss guys, and secondly, I am awarding honorable mentions to 2 entries in each contest as well as a winner. They were mighty close to winning, so they ought to count for something, and I can certainly have more testers.

Robot Wants Robot

The two runner-ups (in no particular order) are...

Felixrain with "Armor Bot: A robot with metal plates covering it. It can only be shot in the back. It can jump and fires two bullets every three seconds or so." The reason this isn't a winner is that it's basically the same thing as the first boss of the game. But I may include it by making little floating heads of that boss... we'll see!

And AtkinsSJ with "A robo-claw! Runs along the ceiling, and occasionally stops to drop a big claw down, then reel it back in." A great idea, but the winner is...

PurpleKoopa! with "Heft: A heavy square robot. Like a Thwomp from Mario games, it tries to crush Robot. [etc]". I'm gonna work on that today! The other runner-ups may end up in the game as well, adding enemies isn't that hard.

Robot Wants Boss

The two runner-ups (in no particular order) are...

PurpleKoopa again! (no bonus prize!) with "A robotic tortoise with a turret/machine guns/etc. on its shell. [etc]" Good solid boss idea, but not the winner.

Moltanem2000 with "Lugnut - insert extensive drawing and explanation here." This was going to be the winner at first, and I'd say the only real reason it's not is that I don't want to have to implement the chain effect it would require. Laziness is the key.

And the winner is...

Stop Its Hammer Time with "Underscore - insert extensive drawing and explanation here too." Despite being very vague on exactly what this thing is (apparently, it's a box. But I think I may spice that up a teeny bit), it's got tons of detail on the part I am interested in - what it does! Sounds like a fun and interesting fight I will get to work on soon.

Thanks for all the entries and cool ideas. A lot of entries had no chance of winning because they relied on mechanics or features (or lack of features) that just aren't in this game. Sorry about that, but that's what happens when you make up characters for a game you have never seen! The main case of this was a lot of bosses that sound like they'd be fun, where you have to hop on platforms to get in position to hurt them. Those bosses would be really fun in a game where you do just hop around on platforms. Unfortunately, in Robot Wants Ice Cream, Robot can fly! To a degree.

I will be sure to do this again soon when I have a game I can throw extra ideas into. If you'd like to see what the two picture-based entries are about, or just see a lot of the entries, visit the Create-a-boss thread.
